LG Shipping $10,000 55-Inch OLED TV Next Month

LG started the New Year with a bang, announcing today that it will begin accepting pre-orders for its 55-inch OLED TV this month, and start shipping them in South Korea early next month.

More than 1,400 LG retail stores in South Korea will begin accepting pre-orders Jan. 3 for the $10,000 product, with deliveries to commence the first week of February. LG expects to take the lead in the OLED TV segment as the first and only company to announce availability of the next-gen TV technology.

The 55-inch television was first unveiled at the 2012 Consumer Electronics Show. Samsung also introduced a 55-inch OLED at CES last year, but LG is now the first to bring it to market.

The 55-inch set is the world's largest OLED TV panel. Most smaller-sized OLED displays use something known as Low Temperature Poly Silicon (LTPS). LG said this new, 55-inch model uses a technology known as Oxide TFT, which replaces Amorphous Silicon with Oxide, which is cheaper.

"Not since color TV was first introduced 60 years ago has there been a more transformational moment," LG's Home Entertainment Company CEO, Havis Kwon, said in a statement. He boasted that LG's razor-thin OLED TV will leave consumers speechless, "a clear indicator as any that OLED TV is much more than just an incremental improvement to current television technology."

The new TV weighs in at less than 22 pounds and 0.16 inches thin. LG is incorporating White OLED (WOLED), which emits white color light from the diode, allowing a lower error rate, higher productivity, and a clearer Ultra Definition screen, according to LG.

The company's excitement for its new OLED TV may not be enough to take to the bank, though. The technology was meant to hit the market before the summer Olympics, but mass production challenges and high projected retail prices slowed the process. By September's IFA trade show, the TV sets were still in the demo phase.

A November NPD DisplaySearch report tipped an uneventful 2012 for the OLED market. The firm expected only 500 sets to be shipped before the end of the year — small in comparison to the total TV market.

Samsung, meanwhile, sued LG last year over a number of patents relating to its OLED technology.

A 57-story luxury tower with robotic parking designed by Porsche

The latest twist on designer parking garages: a Jetsonesque elevator that whisks residents to their condos while they are still in the driver’s seat.
Picture
Pull over into the designated space. Turn off the engine. And enjoy the oceanfront view as you escalate in a glass elevator that takes you, while you are sitting in your car, to the front door of your apartment. No, this is not the latest Disney ride.

The $560 million Jetsonesque tower will rise in Sunny Isles Beach as part of a collaboration between Germany-based Porsche Design Group and a local developer, Gil Dezer. It likely will be the world’s first condominium complex with elevators that will take residents directly to their units while they are sitting in their cars.

“You don’t have to leave your car until you are in front of your apartment,” said Juergen Gessler, CEO of Porsche Design Group.

Here is how it will work: After the resident pulls over and switches off the engine, a robotic arm that works much like an automatic plank will scoop up the car and put it into the elevator. Once at the desired floor, the same robotic arm will park the car, leaving the resident nearly in front of his front door. Voila, home!

The glass elevators will give residents and their guests unparalleled views of the city or of the ocean during their high-speed ride, expected to last 45 to 90 seconds.

Interactive Mirror by Lit Studios

Mirrors with LCD panels have already made an entry into our lives, but what they lack is the power of human touch. Igniting the fun element is this mirror which will put all other products to shame. If you are fan of touch screens, Interactive Mirror will win over you in no time. Designed by Lit Studios, the Interactive Mirror acts as an over-sized touch screen that gives you the power to read, draw, watch movies/videos, paint, browse assignments and pictures, and that too without straining your eyes.

Put up the notes on the mirror and revise while brushing your teeth. Missing your friends, simply start a slide show and see it coming to life with all the people you wanted to see. Feel like doing nothing, go ahead and doddle on it. With so many choices, it will captivate your interest instantly. This will surely make bathrooms all the more special and worth flaunting. All you need to do after putting up this mirror on the wall is make a seating arrangement because looking at it just for a few minutes every day will not be enough.

So, you thought mirrors were just meant for personal grooming or complimenting oneself. Think again!

Woofers
This is functional kitsch; the wrong becomes the new right. By adding a function to an otherwise grotesque object, it acquires new aesthetic values, becoming an object of desire.

Pun intended; these woofers hold the midst between an addition to your sound system and your loyal 4 footed companion.

Picture
They are engineered by a professional audio studio, and sound remarkably well. Available as a co-axial speaker system [two dogs].

If you love your iPhone that much to incorporate it into your inferior design, Finite Elemente’s Hohrizontal 51 is for you. In the shape of a shelf, the iPod/iPhone dock comes with all of the necessary ports to connect it to your home theater system and a remote control. The board can load up to 55 pounds, but the price is pretty loaded too: $600 for one.

Touch-sensitive wall paint that can trigger the lights

This is pretty killer, especially for those of us with inconveniently-placed light switches: Three guys in France (Nicolas Triboulot, Laurent Grapin and Thibault Thomas) have patented a system of paint and an unspecified electronic mechanism that can be used to turn an entire wall into a light switch.

No need to pull any electric wires, the switch can cover a large surface. The switch disappears visually and the electronic mechanism remains hidden. It is accessible almost anywhere, whether in zig zag corridors or in large rooms; the switch is everywhere without being seen. The contact area location and dimension can be chosen easily, whether a strip, a whole wall or an isolated area.Arms full of groceries? Don't feel like getting out of bed? This sounds like a good solution to either of these things. Unless you have a smart dog who figures out he can kill the lights anytime he wants with his nose.

A Wilder Wallpaper

There's been a wallpaper renaissance in the last few years. Design-savvy decorators came through their single-color paint rebellion against the visual assault of trite, cluttered, antiquated prints and decided to give wall patterns another chance. And it was worth it. There are now dozens of designers and small companies producing exquisite wallpaper that amplifies style in a home. One of the rising stars on the scene isAimée Wilder.

Picture
Wilder is a graduate of the School of the Art Center of Chicago who has designed for clients from Bed, Bath & Beyond to Vans sneakers. Her approach to wallpaper design is informed by contemporary graphic art, residential textile design and fashion. Patterns range from stencilized sumo wrestlers to a rainbow of bubble retro TVs. We love "Analog Nights," a two-tone print of old cassettes, turntables, boom boxes, and speakers. Whether you're looking for fanciful, childlike colors or something more staid and sophisticated, Wilder has dozens of fantastic choices to flip through.

Stair Lust...

Somehow stairs have become the object of "design porn" of late, and while it seems as likely that lamps or sofas or kitchen cabinetry could feature in lusty internet photos, stairs prove their worth time and again as one the sexiest parts of interior design anatomy.

The most dazzling example of success in this arena is a staircase at an apartment in London (featured at Apartment Therapy), where the design is really more bookshelf than staircase, but the shelves extend in tiered layers, with each protrusion adding up to a walkway to the second floor. I can only imagine the joy of being the renter who lucks into this place. The fourth in the series features a bunch of videos in which engineers test stair designs using robots. This post veers into serious geek territory but it's fun to watch the stair-climbing robots take on the steps, and interesting to see how designs are developed based on this research.
